On George Orwell and the Copts in Egypt…

  • “If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that even, it never happened-that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death.”
  • “And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed-if all records told the same tale-then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’
  • - George Orwell, 1984, Book 1, Chapter 3

Forget the planned acts of racist violence over the past few centuries, forget the raids of the past decade, forget the suicide bombing in January, forget the burning of countless churches and homes, forget the hundreds (maybe thousands) that have gone missing in the night.

And most recently, forget the massacre of October 9th

There are worse things…

It so happened that the Egyptian Media reported Coptic Christians attacking the military, injuring three soldiers, hence the soldiers acted in self defence and drove over the protestors in their tanks and unleashed a shower of live bullets on the protestors.

Are you serious? Who in their right mind would attack the army? No one.

illogical. irrational. racist. lies.

I happened to read an article in The Age on October 10, from my comfortable home in Australia, that repeated the exact same report from the Egyptian Media. That the Copts were the instigators, that the army and islamic community were heroes.

The Copts have a long history of persecution and martyrdom, and as sad as it is, it only made the church stronger. I’m not worried for my brothers and sisters in that regard.

What worries me is what the media reports, it brings to reality what you thought you would only find in high school literature. The truth: that if you control the media, the reports and all records, then you control the “truth”. It is evident in the situation in Egypt. Maybe this time, the lie was (somewhat) revealed, but what about next time? And last time?

I pray that Egypt does not grow into the country we thought only possible in fictional novels.

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

The Karen in Burma

In the summer of 2006, four friends from San Diego, California set out on a mission to expose the atrocities being done to the people of Burma, more specifically, the Karen people – one of the country’s largest ethnic groups. Burma has quietly been host to the world’s longest running civil war – waged between the country’s military dictatorship and detractors from the regime.

Burma is a closed country known for strong penalties including imprisonment for people found inside its borders without the proper documentation. However, they knew that in order to capture the story they needed, they would have to sneak across the border through Thailand. With backpacks filled with borrowed film equipment they set out without a clue of how they would break inside a countryside filled with landmines, Burmese soldiers, and wet season torrential weather. They didn’t know what they would find, or if anyone would listen to their story when they returned.

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
